About the Gold Coast Naturopath Clinic

Health is so important to us all, but because we do not understand the signs and symptoms that can occur, ill health and disease can arise. When we experience health we also feel good and vital. When health is gone we wonder where our feelings of vitality have gone. Health is the most important concept of life. Ill-health and disease is the result of toxin accumulation.

Acne, Pimples & Skin Blemishes

Acne is the most common of skin diseases. Very few people manage to escape their teenage and young adult years without some pimples and blackheads. However many adults are experiencing Acne and Skin Blemishes beyond teenage years. Skin disorders are due to Chronic Inflammatory diseases of the skin, with lesions occurring most frequently on the face, chest and back as they have the highest number of oil glands. There is an over activity of the oil glands (sebaceous glands) of the skin.

The excessive sebum produced blocks the gland opening which then becomes infected & inflamed. Whiteheads are plugs of oil and dead skin cells under the surface of the skin that block oil from flowing freely to the skin surface. They can turn into blackheads when they reach the surface of the skin. Acne usually starts at puberty when increased levels of hormones (known as androgens) cause an increase in the size and oil production of glands. Other underlying causes can be due to poor diet/nutrition and the body's inability to eliminate toxins.

The importance of a good diet is important, including the need to reduce sugars and fried foods. Supplements including zinc, may be given to promote healing, reduce scarring and inhibit the growth of acne producing organisms. We advise that zinc levels should be measured before taking any zinc supplements. Some nutrients such as

Essential Fatty Acids help alleviate acne but results may not be noticed for 3 months after commencing supplementation.

Have stubborn acne or blemishes, we can help using our facial rejuvenation program to help treat the symptoms of acne and promote healing.

Allergies can affect the respiratory system such as house dust mites, cockroaches, household mould, pollen, passive smoking, or dust. Allergies from foods can have widespread effects throughout the body, including the digestive tract, skin, and respiratory organs. The allergen is the trigger of the allergic reaction, NOT the CAUSE. The cause of the allergy needs to be found and rectified. It usually has a direct link with the inability of the liver, digestive system or immune system to work effectively. Often common medications mask symptoms and have a rebound effect; the more you use them the more you rely on them.

Food and chemical sensitivity tests can be carried out to determine what your body is most sensitive to, eg wheat, dairy, pollen, mould. Allergies should be corrected carefully so as to monitor the liver function, digestive system and immune system.

The physical effects of anxiety occur as a normal reaction to stress. Symptoms can include heart palpitations, nausea, chest pain, shortness of breath, 'butterfly' sensation in the stomach, or headaches. Physiological aspects such as blood pressure, heart rate and sweating increase whilst the function of the immune system and digestive system are reduced. A person that experiences anxiety may also feel a sense of panic or fear. The lifestyle of today can mean that many people experience stress on a daily basis. Many people go to bed stressed and wake up stressed. Stress can be from personal issues, work issues, or pressures that you out upon yourself. These are the everyday stresses that we can experience.

The foods that we eat, lack of exercise and lack of sleep can make anxiety worse. Ensure that you reduce highly sugary foods and drinks, caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol. Include some form of daily exercise that you enjoy and take steps to improve your sleep. There are a variety of supplements that are available to aid the symptoms of anxiety and help relieve the nervous system.

Arthritis is the country's number one crippling disease. The 2 main forms of arthritis are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. It is not a simple disease in any form affecting not only the bones and joints but also the blood vessels, kidneys, skin, eyes and brain. People that suffer from arthritis can experience pain, stiffness, inflammation, damage to joint cartilage, weak joints, instability and physical deformities. Problems usually start occurring after 50 years of age and mainly affect weight bearing joints such as hips, knees, spine, feet and hands. The causes are linked to wear and tear and lifestyle habits. Therefore as we age it is essential to provide natural substances to the joint cartilage to aid it in repairing after overuse or injury, so supplementation may become an important option. Many conventional treatments do not effectively treat the disease. Any of our clients find relief from our Cell Regeneration Program. Ask us how we can help you. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease and is the most common form of arthritis.

It often appears in the weight bearing joints like the knees, hips and spine and in the hands where there is much cartilage destruction followed by hardening and the formation of large bone spurs on the joints. Osteoarthritis is a condition of age because decades of use lead to degenerative changes in joints and the decreasing ability of the body to repair itself. Food allergies almost always contribute to osteoarthritis symptoms so good detoxification is a good place to start in the healing process. Today we know that osteoarthritis is repairable. Glucosamine and Chondroitin sulfates are natural components of cartilage, ligaments and tendons, your body uses these compounds to help rebuild and replace the cartilage in every joint. Herbs can be prescribed that reduce inflammation as well as helping to repair connective soft tissue. Other nutrients, such as zinc, are prescribed to repair cells in the body and also to relieve pain. Rheumatoid Arthritis affects a fast majority of the population.

It is a chronic, autoimmune and inflammatory disease. When the connective membrane becomes inflamed, it invades and damages nearby bone and cartilage, resulting in pain, stiffness, loss of movement and eventually destruction of multiple joints. People who have Rheumatoid Arthritis also have digestive problems, fatigue, anemia, ulcerative colitis, and liver malfunction.

Asthma is a disease that involves the respiratory system where the airways constrict, become inflamed and become congested with excessive amounts of mucus. Asthma is characterised by wheezing that is caused by spasm of the bronchials' or through inflammation or excessive mucus production. Factors that can contribute to asthma include sensitivities to food, poor digestive health, poor toxin clearance by the liver and bowel, or a history of constipation. Some triggers that can lead to an asthma attack include food additives, food flavourings, preservatives (sulfates and nitrates), caffeine, passive smoking, dust mites, household mould and pollen.

Supplements such as Omega 3 fatty acids, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C has been found to reduce asthma symptoms. Support for the immune system can also reduce the inflammatory response against the common triggers and can decrease the duration and severity of the symptoms of asthma.

Benign Prostate Problems

Men that suffer from this condition can experience symptoms of discomfort and fullness, incomplete urination, dripping after voiding, loss of urinary flow and pain on urination. Men also find that they suffer from disturbed sleep due to frequent urination during the night. Factors that contribute to prostate issues include increased abdominal obesity, alcohol use and lack of exercise. Vitamin and herbal supplementation are used to support the prostate gland, reduce symptoms and revitalize energy.

Bursitis is inflammation of the fluid-filled sac (bursa) that lies between a tendon and skin, or between a tendon and bone. It becomes inflamed from chronic overuse, injury or trauma, gout or infection. Common sites include the shoulder, knee, elbow and hip. Symptoms include joint pain and tenderness when pressure applied to joint, stiffness when moving the joint and swelling over the joint. Cell Regeneration Program and herbs that reduce inflammation and promote repair are effective for the pain of bursitis.

Cellulite is a condition that can affect both men and women, however it is more common in women post-puberty. The thighs, abdomen and buttocks is the most common area affected. Cellulite is caused from fat, water and toxins trapped under the skin, which hardens over time. This causes a dimpled effect '- affectionately referred to as 'orange peel skin'. Hormones are a factor contributing to the cellulite effect. Men that have higher levels of oestrogens or who are on medication for prostate cancer can suffer from cellulite. Ensuring that your diet is balanced and reduce refined carbohydrates can help to reduce cellulite. A detoxification program is recommended to help clear toxins that are stored in the fat cells. Specific nutrients can be used to help clear the toxins, promote fat loss, and improve circulation.

Cholesterol is an organic compound that is produced primarily by the liver. It is used to produce many hormones and cellular membranes in our body and is vital in cell membrane fluidity, cell signaling and nerve conduction. Cholesterol is the base structure for adrenal (stress) hormones, sex hormones and Vitamin D.

We refer to Cholesterol as 'good' and 'bad'. HDL (high density lipo-protein) or good cholesterol and LDL/VLDL (low density and very low density lipo-proteins) or bad cholesterol. Triglycerides are a sugar related blood fat that travels with cholesterol. High triglycerides can cause blood cells to stick together, impairing circulation and leading to heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular disease.

We can reduce blood cholesterol levels through changes in diet and lifestyle. A modified diet can reduce the intake of saturated fats and clients are advised against over eating, especially highly sugary foods. Exercise is required as this increases circulation and reduces body fat. There are natural cholesterol lowering supplements available and it is recommended to stop smoking and reduce stress levels.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic Fatigue (CFS) is a condition where the person experiences persistent or relapsing debilitating fatigue. This fatigue does not get better with bed-rest. The symptoms of CFS include widespread muscle and joint pain, cognitive difficulties, mild fever, sore throat, painful swollen glands in the armpits, neck and groin regions, sleep disturbance and chronic mental and physical exhaustion. CFS is a condition whereby the treatment should always look at the long term health solutions rather than just treating the symptoms. Treatment should include a detox program for the bowel and liver to reduce the toxicity levels, especially if tests reveal Leaky Gut Syndrome. A modified eating program can be used to assist the detoxification and allow the body to recover from the viruses that a person can be exposed to.

Constipation is a condition where a person has difficulty expelling hard faeces. This usually happens because the large intestine absorbs too much water from the food. If the food moves through the intestinal system too slowly, the large intestine (or colon) can absorb too much water causing the faeces to become dry and hard. Factors that can contribute to constipation can include: intestinal parasites, dehydration &/or low fluid intake, candida, some medication, stress, low fibre diets, and food allergies. A lack of movement such as exercise can also contribute to constipation.

Adjustments to a person's diet can help the body to eliminate toxins and reduce the toxin production. Herbal remedies and a bowel detox program can help the bowel to clean out any remnants left in the intestines. Increasing the fluid intake to 2 litres of water a day and enjoying regular exercise such as walking is highly recommended to assist in aiding the intestines to eliminate.

Ear Ache

Earaches are common in children and some adults. The most common cause of ear ache in children occurs when infection invade the fluid in the middle ear. Children are more susceptible to infection than adults because of the shorter Eustachian tubes. Frequent use of antibiotics can cause thrush and candida in children and can imbalance the immune system. Modifying a child's diet and supporting their immune system is a key to correcting recurrent ear infections. Ear candling is a gentle yet effective means by which we can 'suck' out any offending wax or fluid build-up in the ear canal.

The most common type of infection in adults is known as swimmers ear. It is an infection of the outer ear and ear canal because the area is dark and moist and is easily accessible to bacteria and fungi.
