Are Your Redox Molecules Leaving You Rusty?

We all know that our bodies are made up of cells. Inside these cells we have reactions that contribute to life. Inside the cell is an organelle called the Mitochondria. The mitochondria is known as the ‘Powerhouse’ of our cells. It is here that many cellular reactions occur to drive energy in our body.


When functioning optimally, mitochondria produce redox signaling molecules called Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). The ROS molecules can be defined into two categories: reductants that cause reduction reactions or oxidants that create oxidation reactions.


Redox signaling molecule reactions take place every time there is a chemical reaction, including inside our cells. Both reductants and oxidants are important, and in order to maintain optimal health, we require them in balanced numbers. If unbalanced a build-up of Reactive Ozygen Species can cause damage to our DNA (genetic material), lipids and proteins. ROS molecules can cause destruction to our cellular membranes and therefore disrupt their function and ability to produce the compounds, such as enzymes and hormones.


Think of when you cut an apple and it turns brown or when rust occurs on a metal such as a nail or car (this is in oxidation reaction). To balance the oxidation reaction we need Reductants to deliver electrons. In the mitochondria one of the most important redox signaling process that occurs is with the addition of electrons to oxygen molecules.  


Do you remember chemistry at school? (Maybe/Maybe not).

There are electrons that create a chemical reaction between elements of the periodic table. Without getting scientific and reverting to my university days. Let’s just say that the rusting process of say a car, occurs because of these reactions that I am about to discuss. Iron and oxygen meet and a reaction occurs to cause rust. We all know rust is a fast way for a car to breakdown. Well think of the same thing occurring inside the cell if compounds combine and chemical reaction occurs then we can get rusting of the body. This kind of reaction in the body can result in ageing.


As we age the cellular reactions generate more ‘rusting’ reactions and we can break down over time.  Now, I remember as a child, that my parents were into 4 wheel driving over the beautiful beach usually at rainbow beach but also many other areas in school holidays. To protect their 4-wheel drive they spent money on a rust proofing protective treatment. Imagine if you could do this with your body. Create a rust proof process or treatment for your body.  There are ways that we can help with the chemical reactions of the body. The chemical reactions that occur inside our mitochondria (our energy house) can be supported with specific nutrients (like a rust proofing treatment of a car).


As we age the chemical and nutritional support that we have for our mitochondria reduces and therefore damage (rusting) can occur with the energy cycle of the mitochondria that is needed daily. Knowing that the mitochondria reactions can be supported and fine-tuned is a blessing. I call this chemistry 101. At university we were taught all about these reactions and how they not only sustain life but underpin all reactions that occur in the universe. By knowing this information, we can help to support life and health.
